We need ctrl-z in real life too. 10:04 PM
this song just like melts me. haha.
----
She said when you blog, you should have depth, or something along those lines. Well okay, sure.
We can talk about poverty, or something along those lines. About how everyone knows that it exists, everyone knows they should do something about it. We could count the number of talks and campaigns in our school, all around us. The question is, how many? How many times have we been reminded, and how many of us actually do aomething about it?
They tell us we can make a difference, that we are not insignificant, that we can change the world for the better. Okay, that works. Doesn't it? Sound possible, within our reach.
Whenever that we have this yearly stand up for poverty event, RGS tells us to wear white to show our support. Most of us do. Then they tell us during assembly to stand up and take their pledge. The whole school follows obligingly. Okay, so what's the problem?
What's changing?
We happily go home and we forget all about the fact that, a while ago, we cried while watching a video of poor homeless starving children in some lonely desolate part of Africa. We forget that we made a promise to ourselves to go on the net, read up about what's being done, do anything in our power to help.
We're all so fickle. This generation, our generation, can you stand back and look at it and honestly say you feel proud of it? Our parents always tell us about how life was so so difficult for them in the past, and they worked hard to give us the best. They tell us how life is too easy for us now, everyone is slowly losing something special called the human touch. Newpapers reinforce that a thousand times over. Articles telling us about how children are so stressed about results they can commit suicide. Was that common in the past? I don't think so. But it is now.
To tell the truth, I don't even know what my points are anymore or what I'm trying to convey. I went from depth in writing to poverty to a screwed generation. I'm a confused kid, so sue me.
anyway. i am tempted to post this short story Chia wrote simply cos i like it(:

Ambition- or lack thereof.
At age 4
“What do you want to be when you grow up Malcolm?”
“Superman! Batman!”
Kids love superheroes. Too bad they don’t exist. Maybe they do, they just don’t wear their underwear the wrong way round.
At age 7
“What do you want to be when you grow up, Malcolm?”
“I’m going to be a train conductor! Or maybe a fireman!”
Older kids love to dream. Oh yes, they do…
At age 10
“What do you want to be when you grow up, Malcolm?”
“I’m going to start a wildlife reserve.”
Preteens have such noble ambitions.
At age 13
“What do you want to be when you grow up, Malcolm?”
“Rich.”
Therein the problem lies.
In today’s society, there is little room to pursue genuine passions and interests. Other than the lucky handful who take the leap of faith in order to do what they love, the bulk of today’s young adults and teenagers are chasing their interests in the wrong areas.
As a student, I feel that there is very little time to spare outside our hectic school lives, obligatory community service and extra-curricular activities to properly educate ourselves in our various areas of interest. No, it is not our school’s fault that we can hardly catch our breath because there is a mile long to-do-list. We brought this upon ourselves. I for one certainly know what takes priority over my interests- my resume. For example, I choose a leadership board over taking up dance lessons, and why? The reason, for someone as pragmatic as I, is simple. Why my college application must be nothing short of perfect, of course!
It is rather tragic, is it not? Our education system works in a way that it only allows you to pursue what you love, on one condition- that you are extremely gifted in that field. We all know that it is for our own good but we must ask ourselves, is it really? It is one thing to like something because you are good at it, but it is another to like something just because. Is it really necessary to restrict the potential of this generation of aspiring visionaries, based solely on what they can produce printed in Arial font size 12?
This brings me to my next point. I have now left you with the knowledge that we can only do what we enjoy if we are good at it. So yes, there is that exclusive group, comprising the few who are lucky enough to excel at their passions. If so, what about the rest of us? Well. Now struck with the realisation that pursuing our passion in life is no longer deemed possible or practical, we are now faced with a new goal. This includes going to the top schools, getting a stellar portfolio that will wow any college board, and such. After a while, we become so focused on that one thing that we can pursue in life, that everything we once loved begins to fade into hues of grey, before ebbing into oblivion and disappearing entirely from our peripherals.
Maybe it’s for the best. Maybe society really does care about our well-being.
But when I grow up, I don’t want to be Malcolm.
